I was just thinking that it would save time not having to weld in a bit on the 1018. Plus then on a hammer pole the hammer end could be hardened as well with the 1045. I know some say 1045 machines well, but I bought some to try and find that I can't get the finishes that I get with 4140 HT. It machines turns better than 1018 but not as good as the 4140 HT. If you are using these as bolts you want them thru hardened, not case hardened because you want to increase the strength of the material.
